Hello, my name is Margaret. My education ( Bachelor of Secondary Education Degree/English Diploma), my extensive experience ( 10+) years as a substitute ESL teacher, a tutor for an international company, and a private tutor, together with my familiarity with Alberta curriculum provide me with the ability and knowledge to tutor both ESL and English Language Arts for students from Grade 7 to 12 as well as university. I also have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I prepare structured lesson and unit plans for my students and/or assist them with their homework or research, depending on need. For essay-writing or other Language Arts assignments, I share strategies with the student to help him or her meet teacher/ curriculum expectations. I make suggestions and edit a student's work and provide remedial instruction when needed. If a student has any learning deficits resulting from inattention, illness, or simply missed opportunities to learn throughout his or her schooling, I address these gaps to provide a secure foundation for understanding concepts and content. Often, I teach time-management strategies that will be helpful not only in the present but also the future when students go to university. At the same time, I expect all of my students to do their share of independent work and to take ownership of their learning. When my student and I work together toward their success, focussing on their strengths and learning from their mistakes, it is immensely gratifying for me as their tutor. I enjoy supporting, encouraging, and inspiring students to do their best, to take risks, and become confident in their abilities. For me, their success is my success. The minimum time for online sessions is 1 hour; the minimum time for in-person lessons is 1,5 hours. In-person lessons must be reasonably close to my home or the University of Alberta. with no more than 30 minutes of travel time each way.
