Essay Thesis Writing

So your teacher just assigned an essay. You have so much you want to talk about, but your teacher tells you to narrow it down. How do you structure that essay to make sure you are writing the strongest essay you can?

A strong thesis statement will help you do that!

A thesis statement makes clear what the main topic of your essay is going to be. A good strong thesis statement will help you to narrow the focus of your paper and keep you from going off track, really it should say what you're going to talk about.

A thesis statement is NOT just a sentence, you need to back up your statement or argument that you're making in your thesis. If you support your thesis well, you will also make clear what you believe and your arguments in the body of your essay will follow a similar path of statement and proof.

Remember, you have to keep it narrow. How can you do this? Brainstorming! Write down all that you know about the topic. If you're a linear thinker, maybe a list, if you're visual maybe post-it notes on a cork board or white board, then look at what you have written. Do you notice any similarities or themes? If so you can use this to help focus your thesis statement.

A thesis statement really sets the tone for your paper, so try to make it as strong and concise as you possibly can.

Good Luck!!!!
