Describe briefly the First Nations land claims issues

Canada has a history of being a settler-colonialist state. This means that immigrants from Europe, mainly England and France, travelled to Canada and formed a colony. They reached agreements (treaties) with the Indigenous peoples that guaranteed the First Nations rights and benefits from the Crown in exchange for use of the land. First Nations people were given sections of land that were exclusively for them, called reserves. These reserves were much smaller than initially agreed upon, and sometimes were not located in the traditional land of that First Nation band. Many of the responsibilities of the Canadian government to the First Nations that were outlined in the treaties have not been lived up to. First Nations people are challenging the government of Canada to make up for the past injustices throughout our settler colonial history. A large part of these challenges is the inherent claim of the First Nations to this land; after all, they were the original occupants of Canada. This is a major issue because the Canadian government has a legal responsibility to look after First Nations people, but they also have economic considerations to think about when dealing with the land claims.
