The corpus luteum is responsible for releasing progesterone (and estrogen) to thicken the lining.

Progesterone is not responsible for maintaining the corpus luteum.High levels of progesterone will cause feedback that will supress LH and FSH i.e there will be no mature follicle/ovulation/corpus luteum.
