This is a bit of a vague question but I will do my best to answer.

First of all, louis Riel led two rebelions so I am a bit confused about which rebelion you are referring to.  I will answer the question for both rebellions just to make sure.

The Red River Rebellion, (Louis Riel's first rebellion) took place from 1869-1870.  The main reason for the rebellion was the Louis Riel was attempting to stand up for the Metis people that the Canadian Government was ignoring in their future plans to expand the country.  The influx of white, protestant settlers was creating tension in the region that was inevitably going to boil over.  The Rebellion ultimately ended in the formation of the province of Manitoba.  The Metis people that rebelled with Louis Riel migrated Westward into the area that is now Saskatchewan and Alberta in order to make way for the influx of new Canadian settlers.

The North-West Rebellion was Louis Riel's second rebelion.  In 1885 it was becoming obvoious that Westward expansion was inevitable for the future of Canada.  This was once again generating friction with the Metis people.  The collapse of the Buffalo population also forced the Metis people to move to agriculture instead of the Buffalo hunt.  This convinced native tribes in the area to rally with the Metis people and Louis Riel for a second time, but they were eventually defeated by the Canadian government.  In the end Louis Riel was killed for treason.

Although the rebeillion failed, the government did make concessions with the Metis people.  They were eventually granted the land rights they wanted in 1887.  There was also a significant political swing in Quebec (supporters of Louis Riel's cause).  The nationalist party gained significant power in future elections in the province.  Discontent throughout the country with the conservative party in power at the time becasue of the Rebellion also led to changes in the Federal elections.  This contributed to the dominiation of the Liberal party moving into the 20th Century.

I am not an expert on this rebellion, however, there are many online sources that are good for information about the rebellions on Louis Riel.  The wikipedia article on Louis Riel does a good job of explaining the history and the consequences.

I hope this helps.
