The water level in a bath tub is 25 3/4 centimetres but drops to. 14 5/8 centimetres when the person in the tub steps out.  By how much has the water level dropped

The easiest way to find the answer is to find the lowest common denominator for the two fractions involved. 25 3/4 becomes 25 6/8 because eight is the lowest common denominator. Since you multiply the 4 by 2 to become 8, you also must multiply the 3 by 2 to become 6. Now you can easily do the subtraction: 25 6/8 - 14 5/8 = 11 1/8. The water has dropped 11 and 1/8 centimetres.
